Your fighter powers up in stages, just like the previous games in the series. For the first time, Vic Viper has help defending the galaxy with three new fighters: Lord British, Jade Knight, and Falchion Beta each equipped with his own weapon configurations. As the last hope, four fighters are sent by the Gradius Army to penetrate the Dark Nebula and bring peace to the galaxy once more. The story is about what you'd expect - an unknown force is terrorizing the galaxy and has wiped out 99 percent of Planet Gradius' forces.
Gradius gaiden series#
That brings us to Gradius Gaiden, which is a step in a different direction for a series that has gained Konami notoriety as a master of shooter design.

For the past few years, Konami has rereleased its classic shooters as "Deluxe Packs." Gradius Deluxe Pack contained the first two games in the series (the second one was never released in the US), and Konami just recently released a pack of Salamander games (aka Life Force). US gamers have been without a Gradius fix since Gradius III hit the Super NES, but there's always been a market for Konami's line of shooters in Japan. Sexy Parodius, however, never interested me, though I don't think I have any real rationale for my distaste.Konami's got a great thing going in Gradius - shooters are a dying breed these days, and not many companies can keep a series as consistent as Gradius has been over the past 17 years. I like the original for being the most like the original Gradius, and enjoy the second game, as well. Anyway, it's a standard game option - no game genie, no code, and it probably upsets a few people, but I can't say I care one way or the other.Īs for Parodius, I am like Greg: Jikkyou Osyaberi is my favorite. I don't have any problem with people manipulating it however they want, though for the most part I leave it be. I never used to like the series, but since GG I love it! Anyway do you guys consider it 'cheap' to rearrange the order of your powering up lineup? Example.I sometimes switch a force field into the third slot.any thoughts? Also I was wondering what is considered the best version of pardious and for what system (please exclude arcade vesions, pcbs, etc).Sort of like Gradius III was set up to let you pick between several types of weapons and defenses, Gaiden lets you customize your power-up sequence. Wow thats wierd, I have just started to get into Gradius Gaiden. On both the Sat and PSX, the first two games come together on one disk, called Gokujou Parodius Da! It's rather dated looking and it doesn't have the automatic powerup system, nor does it have a button for the shot and missile combined.Īs for consoles, you can get the first three games for the Super Famicom and all four on the Saturn and the Playstation I _think._ Oshaberi Parodius is called "Forever With Me" on the Saturn, but I haven't seen it for the PSX ever while I lived in Japan. I have it for my Saturn, but I always play the other games. It's an OK game (and not as risque as many people may think despite its title), but I don't think it's as fun as the other two I mentioned.Īs for the very first one, Parodius Da!, I haven't played it very much. you just have to avoid her leg when she turns over and squashes an octopus. The last level is timed, and the very end there's just a naked woman in bed who you don't shoot. And there isn't really the feel of a "final boss" in the game.

The fourth game, Sexy Parodius, has you doing certain tasks, such as collecting 150 coins and such. The second game, Gokujou Parodius, is pretty good as well. I have a review of this game on my Super Famicom site. And, it's the only Parodius game with my favorite character, the kitty cat Ran.

(It's the third Parodius game.) I really like that one a lot, maybe the best. I just played Oshaberi Parodius last night all the way through for the first time.
